Shifting our Paradigm on Clean Energy Matters

September 19, 2012 News 1 Comment

As the election season heats up, we’re seeing an avalanche of ads from the fossil-fuel industry. But it was only four years ago that companies like Chevron, BP and others were touting their commitment to renewables, and even Republicans were paying lip service to addressing climate change, instead of using “heal the planet” as a convention speech punchline.

The political gridlock on climate change is unlikely to clear up anytime soon, no matter who wins in November. But clean energy is enormously popular in the polls, and we can continue making progress by expanding investment opportunities in renewables. But to truly make the transition to a clean economy, we need a paradigm shift that gives millions of Americans a real stake in a clean energy future.

There are three simple things required: … Continue Reading

Sprint and Others in Support of Renewable Energy Tax Credit

September 18, 2012 News 1 Comment

Today, 19 companies, including major consumer brands and several Fortune 500 firms, wrote to Congressional leaders encouraging them to extend the Production Tax Credit (PTC), a key provision supporting renewable energy.

The PTC provides a tax credit of 2.2 cents per kilowatt-hour of renewable power generated and, if lawmakers fail to act, is set to expire in 2012. Originally signed into law by George H.W. Bush, the tax credit has helped to strengthen energy diversity, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and keep electricity costs low for homes and businesses across the country. … Continue Reading

Will President Obama Go For Renewable Clean Energy in New Term

September 10, 2012 News No Comments

President Barack Obama’s effort to develop renewable power sources and persuade Congress to adopt a long-term energy policy will be priorities should he win a second term, his top climate and energy aide said.

Clean-energy programs and efficiency initiatives will be a focus for the president if he’s re-elected in November, Heather Zichal, Obama’s deputy assistant for energy and climate change, told reporters today in Washington.

“The big issue will remain engagement with Congress,” she said. “The president has talked continuously about the need for a long-term energy policy, and I think that will be something that he will obviously remain focused on in the second term.” … Continue Reading

Renewable Energy Markets Being Dominated By China; US Shares 2nd

September 10, 2012 News 1 Comment

According to the most recent Global Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Indices Report (CAI), China will continue to dominate the global renewable energy market. The country has quadrupled its solar capacity target to 50GW by 2020. At the top of the All Renewable Index (ARI), China will have to overcome some challenges including oversupply of wind turbines and solar panels as well as solve many grid transmission issues to reach its goal.

While China’s score is on the rise, America’s score is going downward. The U.S. dropped 1.5 points to share in second position with Germany. The decline was caused by ongoing uncertainty in U.S.’s long-term energy strategy and a failure to indicate if there will be an extension to the Production Tax Credit for wind projects. The rise in Germany’s score was a result of the government’s approach to addressing barriers to offshore wind development and stability in its solar market. … Continue Reading

Some Good And Some Not-So-Good Clean Energy Stock Investments

September 9, 2012 Blogs No Comments

An energy policy for the United States has become like the weather: everyone talks about it, but no one ever does anything about it. This lack of consistent direction has created volatile, and recently, sharply negative returns to investors in the Alternative Energy space.

With a lot of hot air being generated in the months until the Presidential election, perhaps the wind power generation sector is a place to invest? On the contrary — equity research analysts are warning that this sector is about to be…well, gone with the wind. … Continue Reading

Petitioners Support Offshore Wind Energy And Jobs In Georgia

September 9, 2012 Green Movement No Comments

Seth Gunning of the Sierra Club lets us know why he supports offshore wind energy.

On August 31, SACE and the Sierra Club hosted the “Wind Works: For Jobs, for Georgians” rally on Tybee Island.  The  Tybee Pier and Pavilion, where the rally was held, proved to be a great spot for the event.  We were able to reach out to about 300 people – substantially from the coastal community – and promote the development of wind energy jobs in Georgia. Thanks to everyone who came out!

Georgia has about 14.5 gigawatts of offshore wind energy potential, which is enough to  provide a third of the states electricity. There are already approximately 1,700 Georgians working in the wind energy supply chain and it is estimated that by building just 1/10th of our state’s offshore wind energy potential, we could create 20,000 more wind energy jobs in Georgia.  However, offshore wind energy will need the support of the coastal community and elected officials before we can start to see progress on our states wind front. … Continue Reading

Texans Prefer and Demand Clean Green Energy From Power Companies

September 9, 2012 News 4 Comments

A new retail electric brand offering customers power generated exclusively from renewable sources illustrates Texas’ growing demand for clean energy, a consumer advocate says.

Direct Energy’s New Leaf Energy brand will add to a market already loaded with all-renewable energy plans, but it will be the first available to Texas electric service shoppers certified by Green-e Energy. The independent organization verifies renewable standards for companies seeking its seal of approval.

Tom “Smitty” Smith, director of the Texas office for consumer advocacy group Public Citizen, said the addition of another player in the renewable market “is consistent with the kind of polling that has been done for over 15 years that says that most Texans would prefer to get clean and green energy from their power company.” … Continue Reading

Wind turbines near Rock Port, Missouri

Despite the availability of clean and sustainable energy sources like solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal and biomass, many states depend on outdated and dirty energy sources. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Missouri and Tennessee are among the most in need of an energy portfolio diversification. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has identified solutions for these and other states. … Continue Reading

As The Solar PV Landscape Evolves So Does Its Growth Potential Ahead

17 Aug 2012

Solar Demand

Demand for solar PV energy in the U.S. continues to gain considerable traction. During 2011, installed PV capacity reached the 2 GW level, with 880 MW allocated to the commercial sector and 760 MW to the utility segment. However, this growth has not been realized without certain challenges. Indeed, often years of negotiation take place …

Airborne Wind Turbines: New Renewable Energy Source

16 Aug 2012

altaeros_energies_air_wind_turbine

When somebody mentions renewable energy, most of us think primarily of methods we can use for home production, namely wind turbines and solar panels. However, there are a number of alternative energy sources still waiting to break through into the public conscience. Airborne forms of wind power are arguably some of the most exciting amongst …

From Old Cotton Blue Jeans To Green Home Insulation

5 Aug 2012

Erek Hansen of Curtice, Ohio, stands on a pile of jeans. His goal is to send 5,000 pairs to Cotton: From Blue to Green, a group that collects denim to recycle into housing insulation.

Since 2006 Bonded Logic, an Arizona-based cotton fiber insulation manufacturer, and Cotton Incorporated, an association of cotton manufacturers, growers and retailers, have teamed up to change the final resting place for approximately 200 tons of unwanted denim from the landfill to new homes in the United States, in the form of denim insulation. The “Cotton. …

A new study of renewable energy’s technical potential finds that every state in the nation has the space and resource to generate clean energy.

A new study of renewable energy’s technical potential finds that every state in the nation has the space and resource to generate clean energy. The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory produced the study, U.S. RE Technical Potential, which looks at available renewable resources in each state. It establishes an upper-boundary estimate of …
